Congratulations to the 2025 CAUS Scholarship Recipients
Ruth Arnold
Ruth has recently begun her PhD with Project Seahorse at UBC, where her research focuses on fisheries and trade in Mexico and the status of seahorse populations, with particular emphasis on spatial planning approaches and implications for management and policy. Ruth has extensive scientific diving experience, which underpins her field-based work on coastal and reef-associated species and informs her applied conservation research. Her previous work combined evidence-gap analyses and expert elicitation to examine supply chains of at-risk species in the illegal wildlife trade. She is particularly interested in community-based conservation of marine ecosystems.
Carter Burtlake
Carter is a MSc student at Simon Fraser University studying under Dr. Isabelle Côté in the Marine Ecology Lab. His MSc research is in collaboration with the Huu-ay-aht First Nations where he works as their marine coordinator. Carter’s research and work is focused on documenting the health of Northern Abalone, an endangered marine snail, in Huu-ay-aht’s territorial waters through scientific diving. Carter is assessing the impact of past restoration efforts by the Nation where, 15 years ago, millions of baby abalone were outplanted in an effort to restore the depleted population. Carter is passionate about weaving youth into science and the ocean environment and is an adult mentor for a youth group called the Nuu-chah-nulth Warriors where he helps teach youth about the marine environment through freediving and harvesting traditional foods for community with the youth.
2025 SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS ARE CLOSED
This CAUS Scholarship aims to support excellence in early-career researchers at Canadian post-secondary academic institutions, while advancing a culture of safe scientific diving practices developed by the CAUS. Excellence in research motivates and rewards academic achievement within the scientific diving sector and highlights the important role that scuba diving plays in the aquatic sciences.
Who is Eligible?
Eligible candidates are graduate and senior undergraduate students engaged in underwater research projects who are:
- Enrolled in academic institutions that are members in good standing of CAUS, and
- Undertaking a research or pedagogical project, in any scientific discipline, that makes use of scientific diving in a manner that promotes, advances or otherwise contributes to safe diving practices.
Value of Award
Up to two cash awards of C$1,000 each will be awarded each year. Award recipients will be required to submit a brief report summarizing the outcomes of their work and its impact on scientific diving at the end of the project.
Applicant Requirements
All applicants must be:
- Currently registered as a graduate or undergraduate student at a CAUS member institution in good standing,
- Currently qualified as a CAUS Scientific Diver or equivalent, and,
- Directly involved in a research, educational or a training project that develops, uses or advances the tools and safe practices of scientific diving.
An exception may be made to requirements 2 & 3 above in the case of a non-diving student conducting research that contributes to the advancement of scientific diving or the education of scientific divers.
Application, Deadline and Contact Info
All applicants must submit an application by the stated deadline.
The completed application and supporting materials must be submitted by midnight, November 1 of the year scholarship is awarded. For example, the application for the 2025 Scholarship must be received November 1, 2025. All application files will be treated in strictest confidence and will only be seen by the CAUS Applicant Evaluation Committee. All files will be destroyed after assessments are completed to protect confidentiality.

LES DEMANDES DE 2025 BOURSES SONT FERMÉE
Cette bourse de l’ACSS vise à soutenir l’excellence chez les chercheurs en début de carrière dans les établissements d’enseignement postsecondaire canadiens, tout en faisant progresser une culture de pratiques de plongée scientifiques sécuritaires développée par l’ACSS. L’excellence en recherche motive et récompense les résultats scolaires dans le secteur de la plongée scientifique et souligne le rôle important que joue la plongée sous-marine dans les sciences aquatiques.
Qui est admissible ?
Les candidats admissibles sont des étudiants de premier cycle diplômés et supérieurs engagés dans des projets de recherche sous-marine qui sont :
- Inscrits dans des établissements d’enseignement qui sont membres en règle du CAUS, et
- Entreprendre un projet de recherche ou de pédagogie, dans toute discipline scientifique, qui utilise la plongée scientifique d’une manière qui favorise, fait progresser ou contribue de quelques façons que ce soit à des pratiques de plongée sûres.
Valeur du prix
Jusqu’à deux prix en argent de 1 000 $ CA chacun seront décernés chaque année. Les lauréats devront soumettre un bref rapport résumant les résultats de leurs travaux et leur impact sur la plongée scientifique à la fin du projet.
Exigences relatives aux demandeurs
Tous les candidats doivent être :
- Actuellement inscrit en tant qu’étudiant diplômé ou de premier cycle dans un établissement membre du CAUS en règle,
- Actuellement qualifié en tant que plongeur scientifique CAUS ou équivalent, et,
- Directement impliqué dans un projet de recherche, d’éducation ou de formation qui développe, utilise ou fait progresser les outils et les pratiques sécuritaires de plongée scientifique.
Une exception peut être faite aux exigences 2 et 3 ci-dessus dans le cas d’un étudiant non plongeur menant des recherches qui contribuent à l’avancement de la plongée scientifique ou à la formation des plongeurs scientifiques.
Demande, date limite et coordonnées
Tous les candidats doivent présenter une demande en utilisant la demande fournie avant la date limite indiquée.
La demande dûment remplie et les documents à l’appui doivent être soumis avant minuit, le 1 octobre de l’année où la bourse est attribuée. Par exemple, la demande de bourse 2025 doit être reçue le 1 novembre 2025. Tous les dossiers de candidature seront traités dans la plus stricte confidentialité et ne seront vus que par le comité d’évaluation des candidats de L’ACSS. Tous les dossiers seront détruits une fois les évaluations terminées afin de protéger la confidentialité.
